This post is part 6 of my Newborn Blog Series—a 10-part collection created to help parents feel more prepared and less overwhelmed during those early newborn days. As a Salt Lake newborn photographer specializing in lifestyle newborn photography, I bring a gentle, experience-backed approach to every session.
Including siblings in a newborn session can feel intimidating. With emotions, big changes, and lack of sleep all swirling around, it’s easy to worry about how it will go. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be stressful.
Some of my favorite in-home newborn photography sessions in Salt Lake City include the sweetest sibling moments—tender, wild, and beautifully unscripted. Here’s how I approach these interactions to keep things relaxed, playful, and completely genuine.
Building Trust from the First Hello
As soon as I arrive for your Salt Lake newborn photography session, I take time to connect with your older kiddos—especially the little ones. I sit on the floor with toddlers or kneel to their eye level. We chat about whatever sparks their attention: their toys, favorite shows, the new baby, or even their outfit. When working with older kids, I simply engage in conversation. While I prep my gear, I give them space to get used to me without pressure.
This early connection builds trust and comfort, which makes all the difference when it’s time to start photographing.
Child-Led, Baby-Led, and Always Flexible
My in-home newborn photography sessions in Salt Lake County are never rushed. Sibling involvement is no different. I follow the lead of both the baby and the big siblings. We might take breaks, change activities, or shift the pace to match the mood.
Every child is different. Some need time to warm up. Others are bursting with energy or prefer to keep their distance. All of that is completely okay. My goal is to document what’s real, not what’s posed or perfect. The moments we capture will reflect the true connection of your family.

Reassurance for Parents
Before each lifestyle newborn session, I remind parents that I’ve lived the chaos of newborn life with multiple kids myself. I don’t see mess or overwhelm—I see love. Movement, unpredictability, and strong personalities are part of the beauty of this season.
As a Salt Lake City newborn photographer and a mom, I understand how important it is that your family feels at ease. I gently guide when needed and follow your child’s pace. There’s no pressure—just support.
Why These Moments Matter
The dynamic between siblings and a newborn shifts so quickly. One day, they’re unsure and keeping their distance. The next, they’re snuggling in close and sneaking kisses.
These fleeting in-between moments deserve to be remembered just as much as the posed ones. As a lifestyle Salt Lake newborn photographer, I want you to look back and feel what life really looked like in those first few weeks—chaos, joy, connection and all.
