South Jordan In-Home Session Style Tips for Moms, Dads, and Babies
Part 2 of 10 in The Newborn Session Guide

This post is Part Two of a 10-part blog series created to help new and expecting parents feel confident before their newborn session. I’m a South Jordan-based newborn photographer specializing in natural, in-home sessions. Each post in this series will walk you through what to expect, how to prepare, and how to make the most of this special season.

Keep it simple, soft, and comfortable

When planning what to wear for your newborn photos, comfort matters just as much as style. As a lifestyle newborn photographer, I recommend clothing that supports real movement and connection. The best photos come from moments where you’re focused on your baby—not adjusting your outfit.

Outfit tips for moms

Choose soft fabrics and relaxed fits. Avoid anything stiff or overly tight. You’ve just had a baby, and your clothing should help you feel good—not restricted.

I recommend soft neutrals. Light tones photograph beautifully and avoid casting color onto your baby’s skin. Brands like Quince offer modern, flattering styles in breathable fabrics that still feel pulled-together. These types of pieces work well for lifestyle newborn photography because they feel elevated without being overdone.

Start with the outfit that makes you feel most like yourself. Once you’ve chosen what to wear, we can build the rest of the family’s outfits around it.

What dads or partners should wear

For partners, keep things simple and unfussy. Neutrals, solid colors, and soft textures work best. A fitted t-shirt, henley, or casual button-up paired with jeans or chinos is a great go-to. Avoid bold prints, formalwear, or anything that feels stuffy.

The goal is to look comfortable, relaxed, and at home—because that’s exactly where you’ll be.

What baby should wear

Your baby’s comfort always comes first. For in-home newborn photos, I recommend:

  • Simple neutral outfits
  • Light swaddles without bold patterns
  • Soft, breathable fabrics

We can use both clothing and swaddles throughout the session. If your baby needs to be swaddled to feel secure, we’ll lean into that. There’s no pressure to change outfits multiple times. The goal is calm, connected images—not a fashion show.

How to coordinate as a family

Coordinating doesn’t mean matching. Instead, think about choosing outfits that feel cohesive.

Here’s how to do that:

  • Stick with a neutral color palette (ivory, beige, taupe, soft gray, etc.)
  • Mix textures and fabrics to create depth
  • Include one subtle pattern if you’d like, but keep it minimal

If mom wears a light floral dress, dad might wear a textured oatmeal shirt, and baby can be in a soft white swaddle. That combination will feel natural and timeless without being too matchy.

Colors and patterns to avoid

To keep the images clean and focused on connection, I suggest avoiding:

  • Logos or branded graphics
  • Bright colors or neons
  • Deep, saturated tones like navy or burgundy
  • Distracting patterns (tiny checks, stripes, or busy florals)

These elements can pull focus or cast unwanted tones on your baby’s skin—especially in natural light.

My biggest styling tip? Start with mom

I always recommend that mom choose her outfit first. Find something that feels good on your postpartum body and reflects your personal style. After that, coordinating your family’s outfits becomes much easier.

If you’re unsure, I’m happy to guide you before your session. Whether you need feedback on color choices or help pulling everything together, I’ve got you.
