A guide from a South Jordan newborn photographer who focuses on natural, baby-led storytelling

This post is Part One of a 10-part blog series designed to help new and expecting parents feel informed and confident heading into their newborn session. As a South Jordan-based photographer, I specialize in natural, in-home newborn photography—and this series will walk you through everything from what to expect and how to prepare, to tips for siblings, outfit ideas, and more.

If you’re considering a newborn session but aren’t sure what it’s like to have a photographer come into your home, this guide is for you.

As a South Jordan newborn photographer, I specialize in in-home newborn sessions that are calm, flexible, and rooted in real connection. These sessions are designed to reflect your family’s real life—not a curated version of it—and to help you remember this sacred, exhausting, beautiful season in a way that feels authentic.

Here’s what to expect.

Sessions are calm, flexible, and baby-led

I typically schedule up to 2 hours for each newborn session. Most fall between 90 minutes and 2 hours. This gives us plenty of time to move slowly, pause when needed, and let your baby lead the way.

Before I arrive, I encourage parents to feed their baby. However, I know nothing about newborns is predictable. Cluster feeding, diaper changes, and soothing breaks are all part of the process. We stop and adjust as often as needed.

When babies are fussy, we simply shift focus. I’ll capture you rocking, holding, or comforting them. These moments matter just as much as the sleepy, posed images. In fact, they often feel even more real. Both sides of newborn life deserve to be remembered.

I offer gentle direction when you need it

My approach is mostly relaxed and natural. That said, I offer guidance anytime you’re unsure what to do. If I notice something feels awkward or you seem stuck, I’ll gently step in to help.

In addition, I often suggest moments parents might not think to document—especially during those tired, hazy first weeks. For example, the way your baby’s hand rests on your chest, or how your partner looks at them when no one’s watching. These are the quiet details you’ll want to remember years from now.

We use the rooms that matter most to your story

During an in-home newborn session, I photograph your family in the spaces that feel most meaningful. This usually includes:

  • The nursery
  • The master bedroom
  • Common living areas with good natural light

These rooms don’t have to be perfect. In fact, they rarely are. But they hold the everyday memories you’ll want to look back on. Instead of asking you to deep clean, I focus on emotion, light, and connection.

You don’t need to be “camera ready”

Newborn sessions at home are not about perfection. You don’t need to worry about messes, what your toddler might do, or how your baby will behave. I’ve worked with all of it—and I promise, we’ll make meaningful images no matter what.

If you feel nervous, I often suggest focusing on your baby or your partner. Study the curve of their fingers or the shape of their profile. Think about how far your partner has come as a parent. That shift always brings genuine emotion into the frame.

Why I love in-home newborn photography

In-home newborn photography gives space to capture life as it really is. These sessions honor both the beauty and the exhaustion. They show the connection, the care, and the details you’ll one day miss.

You won’t always remember how your baby curled up in your arms or how your home looked in those early weeks. But your photos will bring those memories back—quietly and honestly.
